Watauga River in Elizabethton TennesseeWelcome! Elizabethton is the county seat of Carter County Tennessee. It is located in northeast Tennessee in the Tri Cities area of Johnson City, Bristol, and Kingsport. Incorporated in 1799, Elizabethton began as a settlement upstream from Fort Watauga along the banks of the Watauga River near Stoney Creek and the Doe River. Now it is a growing city filling the river valleys surrounded by Appalachian mountains. Elizabethon is blessed with a number of natural and man made wonders. Located within the city limits are the iconic covered bridge across the Doe River, Milligan College, Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area, and the Elizabehton golf course.

People come here for many reasons. Some enjoy rafting, kayaking, and trout fishing in the cold water of the Watauga River running through town. There are many things to do outside in Elizabethton. Combined paved bike/walkways exist at places along the rivers and are being expanded. The downtown area offers urban hiking along with the covered bridge park and it's section of biking/walking path. The west end of town has a network of walking trails at Sycamore Shoals. Elizabethton has a number of city parks with playgrounds, tennis courts, baseball, and basketball. The city owned Franklin Center has a pool and fitness facilities. There is also an active Boys and Girl's Club in Elizabethton.

There are a tremendous number of events at Sycamore Shoals including weekend festivals, music, art, and historical encampments complete with people dressed in period clothing. Weekly Saturday night car shows are held downtown in the warm months. Experience live professional baseball with the Elizabethton Twins. School, sports, music, and church events make up a big part of the local social scene.

Shopping opportunities are many and varied. There are a number of antique and specialty shops around Elizabethton, many in the downtown area. Shops downtown include coffee, clothing, restaurants, sporting goods, and much more. There are many restaurants with a wide range of cuisine all over town. For movies there's the historic Bonnie Kate theater on Sycamore street downtown. The Stateline Drive-In theater on highway 19E south of Elizabethton has movies on summer weekend nights.
